Entering into its fifth year, the Taiwanese Film Festival (TWFF) in Vancouver is back again this summer! Organized by students from the UBC Literature Etc. and sponsored by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver and Tourism Taiwan, this annual non-profit film festival is finding a new angle in bridging Taiwanese arts and culture to the Vancouver community. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Taiwan, R.O.C. this year, the festival presents its 2011 theme "Venture Through 100 Years" and highlights the most memorable and classic films throughout the history of Taiwanese cinema. Along with Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's earlier work "Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)", the featured award-winning films "Our Neighbour (1963)", "A City of Sadness (1989)", "The Dull Ice Flower (1989)", "Taipei Exchange (2010)", and "Monga (2010)" depict stories unique to the different eras in Taiwan and together form an intriguing collection of snapshots of Taiwanese history. Whether familiar with Taiwan or not, through these timeless films, you will be fascinated by the rich culture and complex history of this yam-shaped island.
